OVERSEAS DEPLOYMENT SPECIFICS:

PRO BONO MBAs

 How long are assignments?

Hands-on technical assistance projects overseas vary in length from a week to several months.

What skills are needed?

Our traditional strengths are in business (finance, marketing and strategy) and industry.  Engineers well versed in manufacturing and production provide key services, as well. Increasingly, we need volunteers with expertise in information technology and non-governmental organization development.  There is also a great demand for volunteers with experience in training and ISO 9000, 14000 and H.A.A.C.P. certification.

Volunteers with experience in tourism, food processing, human resources and financial services are also needed.  Foreign language capability is extremely helpful, but not required. Volunteers should be proficient in using computers and e-mail. Encountering new cultures, values and practices can be challenging and requires flexibility and a non-judgmental attitude.

Do volunteers work in the U.S.?

More and more of our volunteers are involved in e-consulting work, sometimes as a follow-up to a project overseas, but also as advisors to our research and business development programs.  Volunteers can advise American companies on trade overseas. They also participate in U.S.-based seminars and workshops. And they serve as long-term mentors to small foreign companies and organizations.

Who gets chosen for an overseas assignment?

Selection is a matter of supply and demand - a volunteer's skills must match the requirements of a project. Our partner has approximately 11,000 professionals registered.

What are typical travel and living arrangements?

Economy airfare and specified travel related expenses, such as immunizations and visas, are covered. Volunteers receive a per diem set by the U.S. government for meals and housing. In most cases, volunteers stay in quality hotels or they may stay in a client's guest quarters. If an overseas project lasts 28 days or longer, expenses to enable a spouse to accompany a volunteer may be paid. Certain restrictions apply and spouses are expected to volunteer locally.

What impact do volunteers have?

Volunteers are experienced business and professional people, who contribute their expertise to create positive change in people's lives. Their work leads to the creation of jobs, improved social and economic conditions, better health care and educational opportunities, and the creation of civil societies.
